Why Jobs are Bad for Making Money

I want to start off telling you my experience with jobs so you can understand why I pursued a different path of income.  I got hired at my first job when I was 19 years old in the mall for a minimum wage pay at $7.25 an hour.  I worked hard for two whole months and did well enough to start being trained for a promotion to shift manager.  Midway through my training, I walk into work ready to go and am informed by my coworker that we received a letter from the mall saying they were evicting us from our spot.  We were given one week to find new jobs and get ourselves organized and out of there.  The very next day, I walk to my job and the door to get in is locked.  My manager is there to tell me they locked us out and we are now all jobless.  There goes my "security of income" taken from me in a day. I still to this day have not received my last paycheck because the store owner filed for bankruptcy.

The manager of that job became a friend of mine and she was awesome enough to let me know about the new bookstore she was just hired at that was still looking for more people to help set up the store.  My previous manager put in a good word and I got hired at $8 an hour.  After grand opening, I volunteered to work as the barista in the cafe.  It soon became apparent that I had good selling skills and was selling more memberships than they expected someone in the cafe to sell.  They asked me to be front end on main register to put my skills to the test.  I became their top seller and got the store to hit it's goal every single week.  I even made a company record for selling the most memberships and subscriptions in a day!  The corporate higher ups caught wind of this achievement and featured me on the homepage of the companies website.  I was proud, but I was hoping for maybe a raise or promotion, not a "congrats!" like it was a benefit to me in any way that I made them more money.  When I kept working hard and still didn't receive any more money, I brought it up with my manager and asked for a raise.  "TJ, if I could, I would love to give you a raise.  I'm sorry, but I can't.  The company won't let me."  I'm glad I worked my butt off to hear that.  I started looking for a new job.

A few months later, a friend let me know about a job opening at the place he worked at.  I got an interview and was hired at $12 an hour!  After almost a year of being a slave, I realized I was not happy at all with my job.  I wrote the page Remove Everything You Don't Enjoy From Your Life right before work and walked in and I quit.

Reasons Why Jobs are Bad

Since we were in school, we have been told that if we want money, we have to get a job.  We have been brainwashed into believing that if we do not land a job, we will not be successful in life.

Having Security
They told us that having a job is necessary because it is a security of knowing we will have money in the bank every paycheck.  What they don't stress to tell you is that your "secure" job can end in one simple phrase, "You're fired!"  How wonderful is it to know that any day can be the day where your main source of income can be taken away by a simple decision made by someone else who probably sees you as nothing more than a number?  It's not wonderful at all.  And that isn't even the only way you can lose a job.  You may be laid off, have your hours cut, or like in my case, get your store evicted.  Whether you keep your job or not is someone else's decision based on what is going to make them more money, or help them keep their job.  So much for job security.

Answering to Your Boss
This is one of the main reasons I personally can't work a job anymore.  Having a job means that someone who is higher up than you is getting paid to tell you what to do.  You do not have the freedom to do what you please.  You have to do exactly what you are told with a big smile on your face to not upset the boss.  They have a business to run and they didn't hire you to sit around doing something else.  If you don't listen to whatever they tell you to do, you risk losing your job.  They have power over you.  You are under them and they will let you know.  Now be a good little slave and please the boss.  Who knows, maybe they'll even write you a letter thanking you for your hard work, signed personally by them.  How heartfelt.  Think the bank accepts deposits of thank you notes?

Trading Time for Money
This is a very easy system to accept.  It makes sense that you get paid for the amount of time you work.  Sadly, time is a fixed number, and so is your paycheck.  People work full-time at 40 hours a week to get the same exact paycheck as last time.  Many people find themselves living paycheck to paycheck, staying in their budget, making sure the bills get paid.  You have a set number of hours you're able to spend working for your paycheck.

Do You Want to Spend Your Time Doing Something Else?
There are 168 hours in a week.  If you sleep a healthy amount of 8 hours a night, that leaves 112 hours to be awake.  If you spend 40 of those hours at work, you're left with 72 hours to do what you please.  If you want to see that as a fraction, it means 3/7 of your life is left for you to do what you want.  That means that not even HALF of your life is time for you.  You spend more than half of your life either asleep or at work.  Is that really what you want to be spending your time doing?  There are so many things in the world to experience and enjoy and you dedicate more than half of your time to working for someone else or resting before you do it again.

How Can We Make Money Instead?

An alternative to working at a job is earning what's called residual income.  Residual income is income that is easily maintained, even when you are not working.  It is also known as "passive income".  A few things that can earn you residual income are starting your own business, owning a website, or making investments.  Put in as much time as you want and earn as much money as you want, with no limitations.

Don't expect it to be easy at first. You have to put in the work to reap the reward.  Business owners have to have an idea that they can sell, build up their business and reputation, and sell their service or product.  After it starts making money, they can even go as far as hiring others to do the work for them as they sit back and watch the money keep coming and coming and coming.  No one told them what to do and when to do it.  They are their own boss and work on their own time.  If the business owner has found a service or product they enjoy providing to the public, they never really worked a day on it at all.  They get paid to do something they love.

MLM (Multi-Level Marketing) companies are businesses that provide the product or service for you.  This is the best option for anyone trying to start their own business, but don't have the resources or time to start from the very bottom.  This is a great way to make money on the side with the possibility of becoming very rich and financially free depending on how much effort you put into it.  Check out the Make Money with MLM page to learn exactly how to go about making money this way.

If you can use a keyboard, you can have a website.  As long as you're providing good quality content, a service, or product through your site, you are going to reach many many people via the world wide web.  To build this site, I used Site Build-It.  It's everything you need to make a successful web page with no previous knowledge needed.  Over the years, I've learned the basics to HTML and have used absolutely none of it because they make easy enough that you literally drag a box over to where you want it on your page and start typing or add a picture or whatever inside.  They even have a video tutorial for every tool you get to use.  What really got me to use this was how successful it was for other people.  Here's the Proof and Success Stories of hundreds and hundreds of other people who made their own sites with Site Build-It and are financially stable just by having a website up.

Investing is another way I have become familiar with to generate residual income.  This one is a bit more of a risk, because you have to have money to make money and you can't guarantee the money will be returned.  If you want to start investing in the stock market, I highly suggest you educate yourself fluently on how it works.  It really isn't as complicated as it seems, there are just many different options to take and it will help you tremendously to know what's out there.  Owning shares of a stock means you own a small portion of the company.  It means you have done your research on the company and have faith that they will continue to be more and more profitable.  When they are making money, you are making money.  Do your research and it's a good idea to buy into it when the stock is closer to its 52-week low.  The market goes up and down all the time, so don't get scared if you see a drop and lose some money.  This is the risk of it and just hang on tight and keep your shares in the company!  I was taught by my stock market teacher in high school that history shows that you are guaranteed to profit if you keep a stock for at least 10 years, as long as the company doesn't go bankrupt.  If you think the company will go bankrupt, then that's when you should pull out before you lose your entire investment.  I will be writing a page that goes way more in depth with stocks in the near future so bookmark this page and check for the update!

Not Trying to Get Rich?

Perhaps I got a little ahead of myself.  Maybe not everyone is worried about finding ways to make them as much money as they want.  Money honestly isn't the most important thing in the world, happiness is.  Figure out what it is that you enjoy doing that other people can benefit from and find a way to sell it.  I know a few people who take pride in their work.  Electricians, builders, musicians, artists, etc.  You don't have to be rich to be happy.  As long as you're content, that really is all that matters.  The amount you make depends on how much effort you put into making it.  Provide value to others and never work a day in your life.
