I am well-aware that learning to stop being lazy and starting to be productive is a pain. It's hard to find the motivation to actually do everything you should do. But let me tell you this, after you get over that initial hump of getting started, it's really not that bad. Actually, getting things done becomes really fun after a while. It will get to a point that it will actually feel bad to not be getting a ton of things done.
The most important part of this is getting started. This is the biggest barrier for people to overcome, but once you take that first step, it will be much much easier. The best way to get over the hump of getting started is just to start. So just decide right here, right now that you are starting to be productive.
A good method I found was to start setting little "achievements" to complete. I would write them either the night before or the morning of and make them all things that I was going to get done that same day. These could be of absolutely anything. I'd write down things like:
I even threw ones that were more fun in there. Like:
Make it into a game to complete them all in just that one day. Write down things that you would feel satisfied with getting done. How ever many you would consider to be a successful day. This is going to be the list that makes you feel like you were productive.
When you have your list set, try to get it done as fast as possible. You're going to be surprised when you realize getting everything done is not going to take your entire day. Often times, I'm done with most of the day still left and that feels great. It's awesome to know you got so much done that day and you have the rest of the day to do absolutely whatever. No matter what, even if you decide to sit on the couch the rest of the day, you'll know you got everything done and were productive that day.
You may even enjoy throwing in challenges. Achievements that are really going to push you and help you progress in anything you may currently be focusing on. If you're trying to get more fit, you may set a challenge of running a record distance, or getting 10 reps of a certain weight. You can make challenges for anything. Maybe you want to work on your social skills so you give yourself a challenge to talk to a random stranger that day. Once you complete that, you can set it to be two random strangers in a day. It will feel awesome to be progressing and I consider doing things to progress in your life to be very productive.
It feels good to get things done, especially if you know they are things that are going to benefit you. Once you start, it will be its own motivation to keep going. It feels so good to accomplish so much in a day and it will become a habit. You will become so much more productive when you are accomplishing all your goals. It feels good to do so much in just one day, and when you have a day that you aren’t as productive, it will feel bad and you’ll simply want to be getting things done. Being productive will no longer seem like a hassle. It will be something you don’t understand why more people aren’t doing.
